Yesterday we approximate the great Mitropoulos incredibly beautiful and today for the shift to an equally beautiful and superb performance, left by Leonard Bernstein conducting the Vienna Philharmonic in 1972 taken at the concerts live recording on DVD by DG. This album has been featured in the blog earlier but this opportunity arises (hopefully to the delight of our good friend Maty) in FLAC format with, frankly, a lot better sound quality.

I must confess my passion for this recording. I think one of the best recordings I own, one of the truly great recordings of the music of Mahler, one of the greatest musical achievement of Bernstein and simply unmatched record of this symphony. Simply by the end of the work is worth listening carefully. The concept of Mahler is very mature compared to Lenny a decade earlier, neither better nor worse, just different. Have filed many of the edges of the first approach of Bernstein in these years is much more passionate, while maintaining its usual vehemence is more refined, but not excessive youth and perhaps without the years to come.


The conception of this work has, in my opinion, a huge influence Mitropoulos (can listen to his approach to the previous post), both in technical and emotionally and spiritually. Both men shared similar passions in the human field and the musical and the influence of Mitropoulos was always present in Bernstein respected throughout his life to the Greek master beyond some differences and "forgetting" that existed at the beginning of the race Lenny.

Bernstein's interpretation is achieved by an intensity unsurpassed. The nuances and details of music magically emerge from the development of different movements. Viennese musicians are really superb, with a warmth, musicality and accuracy unattainable. Its instruments and sounds of the fire pass to tenderness, from the cheerful to the intense and thoughtful, are warm, silky, shiny and spectacular. A simply unbeatable service and a deep impregnated emotional warmth.

Christa Ludwig, a regular contributor to Bernstein, sings like an angel and is accompanied by a chorus precious and beautiful. Brilliant, human artist.


I sincerely believe that is one of the most beautiful recreation of the music Mahler, an unparalleled emotional intensity, awesome, amazing and great. For my taste, simply the best (I am not given to speak). I can never avoid getting emotional and shocked with his latest move, irresistible, gorgeous, supreme. I always end up crying. I hope you enjoy this musical gem, I sincerely believe that they will not feel cheated.

Today we leave the first installment of the Third Symphony for the outstanding teacher and superb approach Mitropoulos to this work and particularly the one held on October 30 1960 with the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Cologne two days before his death tested the same work at La Scala in Milan. The approach that we now corresponds to that conducted by Leonard Bernstein in his last years of life and his youth orchestra, the New York Philharmonic. There are also two exceptional singers in this recording are truly impressive, Ludwig and Hendricks. I must confess that regardless of my admiration for Lenny, this recording is the most powerful I've heard and I think it's one of the great records of the recording, particularly one of the best albums of Mahler.

emotional and dramatic intensity obtained by Bernstein is overwhelming and daunting. The provision of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Westminster Choir is superb and really fantastic which adds a wonderful DG sound decision with which you can see, in its finest details, the brilliant virtuosity of the musicians Yorkers, the wonderful Lenny overall conception of the work and detail, the exceptional way that conveys the passion and the concept of the orchestra and the emotional intensity of the voices of both the choir and of the soloists (both impressive and proud, without more, Hendricks).






A stunning album, a Mahler intense and shows a great musical concept matured and wanted to Lenny . An album to savor and enjoy. A gem.

Best Multi Channel Walkie Talkie

Dear friends began to expected deliveries of Mahler's Second Symphony, a work which I have a particular affection, and that really continues to produce an emotion profound in each listening.

Deliveries are planned, in my humble opinion, two phono gems, particularly the ones I like.

The first installment is for the arrogant approach that made Otto Klemperer with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the year 1951. A live concert Holland Festival of that year with the unique and wonderful incentive for the participation of Kathleen Ferrier (an amazing final movement). Klemperer gets a recreation of the play very lively, dramatic and intense, a different and very characteristic of Mahler's style director.

As a curious note indicating the anecdote occurred between Klemperer Mahler and a representations occasion of Berlin's work and that Klemperer was the director of the second band (the main director was Oskar Fried). After the first trials Klemperer Mahler approached shyly asking if he was satisfied that Mahler dry responded "too noisy." After the concert, Mahler Klemperer shook hands and said "excellent." This work left them both and especially for Klemperer was a unique and unrepeatable moment in your life. Mahler had a positive influence in launching the career of its recommendations by Klemperer and Klemperer support and kept faith with the work of Mahler and the person forever, even in moments in which his work had fallen into "disgrace" and even leading to a disaster such artistic fidelity to Klemperer's career (it was the origin of his descent into hell of the time American and her fall from grace in European forums.)

this recording reflects the efforts Klemperer to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the death of Mahler. Their pressure on the Vox label, with which it was recorded in Vienna several works, facilitated the participation of the director in Holland, the city where the celebration of the composer's death did have a great impact (Mengelberg had done a tremendous job dissemination of the work of Mahler). Participated in three concerts with the Dutch orchestra and was lucky to have Ferrier (which incidentally, had very little positive concept of Klemperer, quite the contrary, negative in the personal and musical). The union gave results that are reflected in this decision. I sincerely believe unrepeatable.
